I have my own flock of Pigeons, Sparrows and Starlings that feed in my garden along with a number of other species. Normally the Pigeons do a great job of hoovering up any spilt seed. But last summer we did have some rats that moved into the gardens after a population explosion from the fast food restaurants (where there is always discarded food) around a kilometre away. In that unfortunate situation I had to temporarily halt feeding the birds and put out poison for the rats – I wasn’t happy about doing it but society tends to be squeamish about rodents other than Squirrels! I do occasionally get Mice indoors but I usually catch them in a box trap and walk them down to the local nature reserve to release them.
